Magic will be your primary weapon during battle.
Magic has a wide variety of effects and elements, and you will need to make careful use of them in order to deal with different enemies.
Attacking enemies also fills your Fairy Gauge, allowing you to unleash Magic Chains.

Note that there are some enemies who will take multiple actions and use several magic abilities during their turn.

All magic has an MP Cost, (Target) Range, Power, Element, and Additional Effect.
Performing magic will cost more MP the more powerful it or its additional effects are, and/or the greater the number of targets.

Attack magic with a wide area of effect will deal damage according to the color of the glowing squares that appear when selecting your target. They follow this order, from weakest to strongest damage dealt: yellow , orange , red .

Magic Chain and Extreme Magic

Magic Chain is a powerful magic attack used in succession by your team members working together.
It allows you to deal a lot of damage to all enemies.
You will also be rewarded with more EXP than usual if you unleash Magic Chain during battle.
Use Magic Chain when your Fairy Gauge is full.

Perform a Magic Chain.

Note that all characters can use Magic Chain.

Choose between Chain and Finisher and attack using the character's magic.

Chains will increase according to the character's Rank.

Select Chain to tag in the next character, who will also have the option of attacking with either Chain or Finisher magic.

You can continue a chain up to the number of Chain Combos you have available to you.

The number of Chain Combos available to you will increase according to your Guild Rank and other factors. You can view your available Chain Combos by selecting View Magic Chain from the Magic section of the main menu.

Select Finisher to perform a Finisher attack and end the Magic Chain.

The Fairy Gauge will be reduced to 0.

Note that once you have executed your maximum number of chains, you will only be able to select Finisher.

It is possible for Chains to fail, in which case the Magic Chain will end and you will not be given the chance to perform a Finisher.

Extreme Magic

You will acquire Extreme Magic every time your Guild Rank goes up. Extreme Magic may activate when you have performed over a certain number of Chains.
Special characters like Exceed Units and Makarov will appear and aid you with extremely powerful magic.

Note that there may be parts of the story during which Extreme Magic will not activate.

There is also a type of Extreme Magic that automatically activates when you're in trouble.

Over Damage

If you do battle near a destructible object (such as a fallen tree or boulder) that is blocking your way, you can destroy it and clear your path by exceeding a certain amount of damage.

Unison Raid

If Magic Chain activates while several characters are Awakened or have changed modes, a Unison Raid will begin.
Magic will automatically Chain during a Unison Raid, allowing you to deal immense damage to your enemies.
When certain characters, like Gray and Juvia, who are connected in the story are paired together, a special Unison Raid may trigger.
