A

haunting experience,
beautifully reborn

Everything from the graphics, sound, and controls have been updated.
The texture of each character’s skin and clothing has been meticulously refined, while the setting of Minakami Village has been beautifully reimagined with striking contrasts of light and shadow to create an atmosphere that is both haunting and lifelike.
With spatial audio, players can sense the presence of spirits more vividly than ever before, heightening the tension as they explore the village where vengeful spirits lurk— a truly immersive and terrifying experience awaits.

Appearance of Wraiths

Spirits can appear when least expected. They may grab Mio's hand when reaching for an item, or await beyond a door recently opened, reminding players that danger lurks in every shadow.
Quick reactions allow players to evade these sudden attacks, but failure to do so will result in Willpower Damage, resulting in an intense battle against the wraiths.

Sprouting Wings

During combat, evil spirits may sprout wings and become Aggravated.
While Aggravated, spirits are shrouded in crimson malice, rapidly regenerating health while attacking more frequently and with even greater strength.

After dealing a certain amount of damage, spirits can be snapped out of their Aggravated state, triggering Fatal Time.
You can also prevent a spirit from sprouting wings by defeating it quickly.

New feature: Hold Mayu's Hand

A new gameplay feature has been introduced in this title: the ability to hold hands with Mayu.
By holding her hand, players can restore both Health and Willpower.
However, when Mayu is in danger, she may fall, requiring Mio to help her up.
Holding hands allows players to feel the sisters’ bond more deeply throughout the story.

A deeper dive into the world of Crimson Butterfly

This remake introduces a brand-new ending, along with additional side stories and new areas that further explore the stories and backgrounds of the game's characters. These additions allow players to experience the world of Crimson Butterfly in greater depth.

New Ending

In addition to the original ending from FATAL FRAME/Project Zero II: Crimson Butterfly, this remake features an exclusive new ending, accompanied by the new song “Utsushie” by Tsuki Amano. A new possibility awaits...

Side Story

During exploration, obtaining the item Broken Spirit Stone will unlock side stories for various characters.
These stories reveal untold episodes from the characters’ pasts, offering deeper insight into their lives and expanding the lore of Crimson Butterfly.
Seijiro Makabe
The folklorist Makabe sits at his writing desk, appearing to compile the results of his research on the village.
Itsuki Tachibana and Chitose Tachibana
Traces of the past left behind by the siblings Itsuki and Chitose lead towards a massive, decaying tree. By following these traces, will their destination be revealed?

New Areas

Umbral Mound
An area surrounded by dense bamboo groves, where a burial mound tightly bound with ropes stands ominously.
Eikado Temple
A candle-lit hall with twin statues bound together by cords enshrined at its center.

A

n Evolved Camera
Obscura

The series’ signature system—repelling wraiths by photographing them with the Camera Obscura—returns in this title, now enhanced with new functions such as focus, zoom, and switching filters.
These additions expand the depth of gameplay, allowing for a richer use of the Camera Obscura in both exploration and combat.

Using Camera Obscura in Battles

By raising the Camera Obscura and taking a shot, players can attack wraiths.
Aligning the focus point with a wraith increases the amount of damage dealt.
Shutter Chance
When the damage inflicted on a wraith exceeds a certain threshold, it enters a Shutter Chance state.
During this brief moment, players can deal great damage with the Camera Obscura.
However, the opportunity vanishes after a single shot—so timing and precision are key to strike at the perfect moment.
Fatal Frame / Fatal Time
By capturing a wraith at just the right moment—such as when it attacks—the player can trigger a Fatal Frame, staggering the enemy and interrupting its attack.
If a Fatal Frame is successfully taken during a Shutter Chance, the player enters Fatal Time, a brief window that allows for consecutive shots with the Camera Obscura, dealing great damage to the wraith.

New Features of Camera Obscura

Focus
When the focus is properly aligned, both the wraiths and the markers that appear become clearly visible.
The better you focus, the greater the damage dealt when taking a shot.
Time your capture when the auto-focus locks onto the target to inflict massive damage.
You can also adjust the focus manually.
Zoom
By zooming in, players can stay hidden behind cover and attack wraiths from a distance without being detected. On the other hand, zooming out allows for wider shots that capture multiple targets at once.
Some objects can only be photographed by using the zoom function, making it a valuable tool not only in battle but also during exploration.
Filter
Filters have their own unique functions in combat and exploration, and mysteries of the village can be unravelled while switching between filters depending on the situation or wraiths you encounter.
The Paraceptual Filter can increase the shooting distance in combat, and in exploration, it can reproduce past actions that remain as residual memories.

Special Shot

In addition to standard photography, the Camera Obscura now allows players to perform Special Shots during combat.
Each filter has unique effects, such as restraining wraiths or dealing heavy damage, allowing players to adapt their strategy to the situation.
When wraiths are difficult to capture, use Special Shots to immobilize them and create an opening.
Paraceptual Filter: Blinding Special Shot
Temporarily robs the target of vision, allowing players to escape while the enemy is disoriented.
Radiant Filter: Purging Special Shot
Channels willpower to deal massive damage. The longer it is charged, the more powerful the shot becomes.

Special Filter Functions

Each of the Paraceptual, Exposure, and Radiant filters have special effects that can be used during exploration.
Exposure Filter: Phantom Exposé, Revenants
Some objects and locations in the village have vanished.
If you possess a key Photo, you can restore them using the Exposure filter.
Additionally, invisible revenants inhabiting certain locations can be revealed by photographing them with this filter.
Radiant Filter: Unbinding of Blood
Certain areas are sealed by bloodstained handprints filled with lingering resentment.
These seals can be dispelled using the Radiant filter.
